On behalf of the creators of MAKE and Boing Boing, I welcome you to Makers Market, a curated marketplace of wonderful science, tech, and artistic creations created and sold directly by some of our favorite Makers from around the World.
Before I go further, let me make one thing absolutely clear – WE ARE IN EARLY BETA!! We are brand new and many of our sellers are still activating their stores, but we thought we’d give the early birds (brave souls that they are) some exposure to our first wave of shoppers. There are obviously a lot of moving parts in a market like this, and we wanted to get up and operational so we could get feedback from actual sellers and shoppers – real people like you!
Having said that, we are fully functional, so come on in and have a look around, maybe register as a user (or as a prospective seller), drop us a note at help@makersmarket.com and let us know what you think and maybe support one of our pioneering Makers Market sellers by purchasing something in their store front.
With that caveat out of the way, let me explain a bit more about our new baby – Makers Market.
A collaboration between the creators of MAKE and Boing Boing, Makers Market is an online marketplace bringing together our favorite entrepreneurial makers selling products and services directly to DIY enthusiasts – people with a thirst for life-enriching exploration through hands-on science and tech projects, risk-taking, art, sustainability, self-reliance, and hands-on learning. And true to our character, we’ll toss in a pinch of mischief-making from time to time for good measure.
Most of the sellers you’ll discover in Makers Market are makers we’ve come to know through the course of our work with MAKE magazine, Boing Boing, Make: Online, CRAFT, Maker Faire and Make: television. Each was selected by our staff and personally invited to open a storefront in the market. The products you’ll find here were either made by, rebuilt or refurbished by, or substantially produced by the maker selling them. We call it “Maker-Made.”
You don’t need to create an account to peruse the site or purchase a product, but you’ll need one to nominate yourself as a seller or participate in discussions.

@G. Andrew Stone – Yep, big blip followed by sustained growth (see chart). We’re seeing overall traffic to the site up hugely from all sources, with Boing Boing at the head of the pack. On Friday (the day after launch), we reached a peak of 55K pageviews. We’re adding more sellers (and sellers are adding more products) every day, so the site is becoming more compelling all the time. In the week since launch, we’ve nearly doubled the number of active sellers with many more prospects in the queue. We have more detailed reporting in the works for sellers like you – it got pushed back a bit when we went live since we had to jump into bug quashing mode. So stay tuned to your dashboard, more to come there! And if you have more detailed questions or suggestions you can message me here: http://makersmarket.com/manage/messages/new?message[recipient_id]=16
